Women’s Basketball Soars Above Falcons

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated Fitchburg State 76-56 Tuesday night in non-conference women's collegiate basketball action at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the win, Curry improves to an overall record of 4-1 on the season.

The Colonels came out strong, holding the Falcons to just five points in the first quarter, while sophomore Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) scored nine points on 3-for-5 shooting, including a three-pointer. Fitchburg played better in the second quarter but was still outscored by Curry by one point, leaving the home team with a 34-23 heading into halftime.

The Colonels' offense exploded in the third quarter, led by freshman Sophie Hilbrunner (Waltham, Mass.) and Dunn who each scored nine points. Hilbrunner shot 4-for-5 from the field in the period while Dunn went a perfect 3-for-3. Ellery Campbell (Rockland, Mass.) was another significant offensive contributor in the quarter, scoring three straight layups during a 12-4 scoring run for the Colonels.

Dunn approached a triple-double with a game-high 25 points, adding nine rebounds and seven assists. Hilbrunner was close behind with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Campbell added 10 points. Siena Schaller (Ivoryton, Conn.) caught fire coming off the bench, knocking down her first three three-point attempts to add nine points to the Curry total.

Curry College begins conference play on Wednesday, November 29th, hosting Wentworth. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
