Women's Basketball Knocks Off Soaring Eagles to Win Elmira Tipoff Tournament

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Curry College women's basketball team earned a 75-64 win over Elmira College on Sunday afternoon to claim the Elmira Tipoff Tournament crown at the Spiedel Gymnasium.

With the victory, Curry improves to 3-0 overall on the young season. It marks the second consecutive season the Colonels have opened 3-0.

The teams battled back and forth in the opening quarter, and the Soaring Eagles led by a narrow 16-14 margin at the end of 10 minutes. Junior Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) each notched five first quarter points for the Colonels.

Freshman Lauren Morse (Holyoke, Mass.) picked up 10 points in the second quarter as the Colonels brought a slim 35-34 lead into the locker room by outpacing Elmira 21-18 in the period.

Curry pulled away slightly in the third quarter by outscoring the hosts 19-14 to carry a 54-48 lead into the final 10 minutes. Dunn led all players with 10 third quarter points.

The visitors closed out the win with a 21-16 final quarter, securing their second tipoff tournament title in three years. McCarthy led all players with seven points in the fourth.

Dunn finished as the game's leading scorer, notching 25 points. McCarthy (14) and Morse (10) were the only two other Colonels to reach double figures in scoring. Freshman Sophie Hilbrunner (Waltham, Mass.) was Curry's leading rebounder with 13 boards, her first career double-digit rebound performance.

Following the contest, Dunn and Hilbrunner were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Next up for the Colonels, they will look to stretch their season-opening win streak to four when they host their home opener against Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday evening. Tipoff from Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m.
