Women’s Basketball Halted by UNE in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College Women's Basketball fell to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent University of New England at home Thursday evening by a final score of 71-58.

With the loss, the Colonels drop to 5-7 overall this season and 1-4 in the CCC.

The opening quarter of the conference matchup saw a dominant Colonels' side, Curry taking off on a 7-0 scoring run in the opening 2:12. Curry senior guard Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) led the charge with six points in the opening quarter. The Colonels would lead by as much as 11 points with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.

A 16-16 second quarter saw the visiting Nor'Easters fight back against the dominant Colonels' offense. UNE's Faye Veilleux notched seven points in the deadlocked quarter and helped facilitate a 7-0 run heading into the halftime break. Curry's Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) marked six points and four rebounds in the quarter to keep the Colonels in the battle. 

UNE's strong offense continued into the third quarter, outscoring the Colonels 21-11 through the period of play. A Kaitlynn Smith three-pointer and a layup from Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) in the quarter's final moments kept the Colonels within one point of the visiting Nor'Easters as they entered the final quarter. 

The visiting Nor'Easters held their lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Colonels 22-10. UNE's Keagan Dunbar notched seven in the final quarter to propel the visitors to a 71-58 win on the road.

Curry was led by Kaitlynn Smith (13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Kathryn Dunn (12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists), and Lauren Dunn (8 points, 5 assists).

The Colonels return to the court Saturday as they continue CCC action with a road matchup against Suffolk University at 1 PM.
