Women’s Basketball Downs Dean in Home Opener

MILTON, Mass - Curry College Women's Basketball defeated non-conference opponent Dean College Tuesday evening in their opening matchup in Katz Gymnasium. 

With the win, the Colonels begin their season with an overall record of 1-0. 

The two non-conference sides were evenly matched through the opening quarter with the score 17-15 in favor of the Colonels headed into the first intermission. Freshman guard Lauren Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) paced the Colonels with six points on a pair of threes in the opening quarter.

The Colonels took charge quickly in the second quarter as Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.), Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.), and Nicole Moran (Framingham, Mass.) each tallied layups contributing to an 11-2 scoring run by the Colonels. A Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) three-pointer and layup along with six points by Kathryn Dunn in the final few minutes of the half pushed the Curry College lead to 39-21 heading into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw the two sides evenly matched, much like the opening quarter of the matchup. Both sides shot 33% from the field in the third quarter with two threes from Curry sophomore guard Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.). The Colonels would outpace the Bulldogs by just three points in the third, sending the contest into the final period with Curry leading 54-33. 

The final quarter of the evening non-conference matchup at Katz Gymnasium saw a dominant Colonels side, outscoring the visiting bulldogs 28-16. Curry freshman guard Lauren Dunn kicked off the final quarter with a three just seven seconds into the period pushing the Colonels' lead to 57-33. Curry freshman forward Julia Buckley (Georgetown, Mass.) solidified the win at home by contributing nine points and six rebounds in the final 2:19 of play. The Colonels would close out the home opener with a final score of 82-49.

Cat Thomas was the highlight of the night for Dean, notching 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Guard Tori Viau notched 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Tori Andrewski was the contest's leading rebounder with 15.

The Colonels were led by freshman guard Lauren Dunn (19 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds), Kathryn Dunn (18 points, 3 assists, 8 rebounds), and Kylie McCarthy (10 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds).

The Colonels return to the court Thursday as they travel to face the Fitchburg State University Falcons at 7 PM.
