Women's Basketball Can't Weather Storm Against UNE

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's basketball team suffered an 87-56 defeat to the University of New England on Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the defeat, Curry drops to 3-10 overall on the season and 0-6 in CCC play. UNE stays unbeaten at 5-0 in the CCC, and 7-5 overall.

The Colonels kept the score close in the opening quarter, trailing just 22-16 at the end of 10 minutes. Freshman Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) notched seven first quarter points to lead the hosts.

The second quarter was all Nor'easters, as they outscored Curry 23-6 to take a 45-22 lead into the break. Sophomore Jordyn Franzen led the visitors with 10 second quarter points, while Curry was only able to connect on two of its 12 second quarter attempts from the field.

UNE scored the first 18 points of the third quarter to further extend their lead to 63-22 midway through the third. Curry closed the period on a 13-2 run to make the score 65-35 heading to the fourth.

The teams traded blows in the fourth quarter, with the Colonels converting four of their nine three-point attempts down the stretch. UNE narrowly outscored Curry 22-21 in the fourth to end the contest at 87-56.

Curry was paced by 17 points from junior Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.). Freshman Emerson Cherry (Sturbridge, Mass.) added a career-high 14 in the defeat, while classmate Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) closed the day with 11.

Curry will be back in action at home on Wednesday evening with another CCC contest against Suffolk University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
