Colonels Beaten by Bison in First CCC Contest of the New Year

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Basketball team was defeated in their first conference contest of the new year by a score of 70-91.

With the conference defeat, the Colonels fall to 3-8 overall on the season and 0-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). With the win, Nichols improves to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.

The night's contest began entirely in favor of the hosting Bison. A 12-4 run capped with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Abrianna Vasquez through the opening five minutes of play granted the hosts an early lead. Junior forward Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) put the Colonels back in the scoring column with a layup following the Bison's scoring run. Free throws from Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) and Jamey Satterfield (Eddington, Maine) closed out the scoring in the first period of play for the Colonels.

Curry found a rhythm in the second installment of the night's contest, outscoring Nichols 24-16. Curry's Kristyanna Remillard knocked down five layups and a free throw leading her side with 11 points in the period as Kathryn Dunn drove through traffic to drop a pair of layups to assist in closing the lead produced by the Bison. Both sides would head into halftime with the hosts leading by only two, 35-33.

Following the valiant efforts of the visiting Colonels, the Bison took back control of the conference matchup. Led by Abrianna Vasquez, Nichols outscored Curry 29-18 in the third quarter of play. The Bison caught the Colonels sleeping, marking nine steals in the third. Knocking down 10 shots from the field compared to Curry's five led to a lopsided scoreline heading into the fourth quarter. Both sides kept the same momentum in the final ten minutes of play in Dudley, Mass. The Colonels could not find a rhythm while shutting down offensive efforts from the Bison resulting in the hosts outscoring Curry 27-19 in the final period of play. Two consolation free throws from Curry's Jamey Satterfield and a block from Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) closed out the contest. The Bison would take the conference matchup 91-70.

Nichols College was led by Abrianna Vasquez who dropped 27 points and 10 steals in the win. In addition, forward Summer Klein recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds for her side as Hailey Houghton marked 17 points with 7 assists.

The Colonels were led by Kristyanna Remillard who recorded 20 points with seven rebounds in the loss. Curry forward Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds on the road as Kaitlynn Smith found the basket for 10 points and four assists.

The Colonels get back out on the court Saturday as they host Endicott College, continuing CCC action this season. Tip-off is set for 1 PM.
