Colonels Dropped in Conference Opener at Home

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's basketball team was defeated by Western New England in their Commonwealth Coast Conference opener Wednesday evening at Katz Gymnasium by a score of 72-34. 

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 2-5 overall on the season and begin conference play with a record of 0-1. With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCC. 

The Colonels opened the night's action with a 5-0 run through the first few minutes of play. A pair of free throws from WNE's Grace Fisher put the Golden Bears on the board, trailing 2-5. Colonel guard Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) tallied two more to Curry's score with a layup going the other direction. A three by Golden Bear Alexia Leon tied up the contest with 5:48 left in the first quarter. Curry's McCarthy answered back immediately with a three on the other end, keeping the Colonels up 10-7. The Golden Bears would go on a 10-2 run through the remainder of the first quarter to put them in the lead, 17-12. 

In the second quarter, the Colonels would be outscored 17-6. Golden Bears forward Grace Fisher led her side through the second with eight points and six rebounds. 

The Golden Bears held their lead through the first period of the second half. WNE recoded 23 points shooting 10-13 (76.9%) from the field in the third quarter as the Colonels were held to just nine points shooting just 23.1% from the field. The Golden Bears would lead 57-27 going into the final period of play. 

The fourth quarter was all WNE's. Golden Bear freshman forward Caitlyn Hunt came off the bench and shot 80% from the field, tallying 10 points in the fourth. The Colonels were held off from closing the deficit presented by the Golden Bears through the contest, sealing the first CCC win for WNE this season.

The Colonels were led by junior forward Krystianna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) who tallied 10 points with 8 rebounds in the loss. Freshman Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) recorded 9 points and 9 rebounds at Katz Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The Colonels hit the road Saturday afternoon to continue CCC action as they take on the Roger Williams Hawks at 1 PM.
