Colonels Dropped by Lyons in Non-Conference Bout

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Wheaton (Mass.) at home Wednesday evening. This marks the Colonels' third loss on this young season. With the loss, the Colonels drop to 2-3 overall. With the win, Wheaton improves to 2-3. 

The Colonels were only able to record 23.2% (16-69) shooting from the floor while Wheaton dropped 45.8% (27-59) in their dominant victory. The Colonels were able to force Wheaton to 27 turnovers in the contest while only recording 17. The Lyons also lead in the rebounding category, recording 57 to Curry's 36. 

Colonels guard Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) led her side with a team-high 18 points including four rebounds and three steals. Forward Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) dropped nine points along with four rebounds and a steal. 

The Colonels were trailing 7-6 behind the visitor with just 6:24 left in the first quarter. This would be the closest the Colonels came to the visiting Lyons through the contest. Wheaton would go on to record 19 unanswered points through the first quarter, gaining a comfortable lead early. A free throw from Curry freshman guard Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.) resumed Curry's scoring at the 8:23 mark in the second. 

The Colonels closed the lead with a lay-up from Remillard and a three from senior guard Lily Gray (Brooksville, Maine) with 6:02 remaining in the half. Wheaton would then extend their lead later in the half with a three-pointer drained by first-year guard Greta Minos (West Roxbury, Mass.) sending the Lyons into the intermission up 46-20. Minos would record 13 points for the Lyons coming off the bench.

Wheaton maintained their lead through the third quarter, only allowing the Colonels to find the basket for two three-pointers through the ten minutes. 

The Colonels gained a bit of momentum in the fourth quarter with an 18-4 run, cutting the deficit to 20 points; now trailing 64-44. With only 2:09 left on the clock, the Colonels were not able to climb back from the deficit, falling to the Lyons by a score of 68-47.

The Colonels head back out on the court Saturday as they host Salem State at Katz Gymnasium, tip-off is set for 1 PM.
