Colonels Victorious Over Anna Maria, Record First Win of the Season

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Anna Maria this evening at Katz Gymnasium by a score of 73-66, recording their first win of the season. This win in the first round of the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament grants the Colonels a spot in the final where they will face Western Connecticut State.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-2 overall on the season.

The Colonels took a lead right out of the gate this evening, going on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of play. However, through the first ten-minute period, the AMCATS closed the lead the Colonels worked towards and sent them into the intermission now only leading 17-16.

Through the first quarter, both sides recorded 7-19 FG and 1-6 from the arc, proving how even the contest would proceed.

The Colonels pulled back into a more commanding lead in heading into the half, now leading 42-32. Curry junior guard Kaitlynn Smith recorded nine points in the second shooting 50% from the field aiding her side going into the half.

The third quarter proved to be a close battle between the sides yet again. With threes dropping on three consecutive possessions from both sides midway in the third, the two sides were going blow for blow with the Colonels still holding on to a lead.

The fourth quarter began 60-47 in favor of the Colonels. The AMCATS would come within six points with 16 seconds remaining on the clock. Despite heavy press and timeouts by Anna Maria, they were not able to catch the Curry lead. Curry took the win, 73-66.

Colonels guard Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) led Curry with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Junior guard Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) recorded 15 points and three assists in the win. Colonels forward Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) tallied 13 points with four blocks and nine rebounds.

The Colonels head back out on the court Saturday for the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament final as they take on Western Connecticut University at 3 PM.
