Scrubb Leads Women's Basketball to 66-52 Conference Victory at Nichols
DUDLEY, Mass. – Curry College junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) scored 24 points to lead the Colonels to a 66-52 victory at Nichols Wednesday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams. Curry picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-4 overall, while Nichols will look for its first win of the season Saturday at Western New England College.

Scrubb, who finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards, finished 9-of-11 at the free-throw line and was joined in double-digit scoring by Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) with 16, and Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) with 10. Both Beltz and Rafferty pulled down eight rebounds.

First year Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) led Nichols (0-4) with 13 points. Junior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) scored five and added seven rebounds in the second half, and sophomore Kasey Pelletier (Dunstable, Mass.) dished six assists.

Scrubb hit a three-pointer with nine minutes left in the opening half to tie the game at 15-all, and used an and-one hoop to give Curry the lead for good. On the Colonels’ next possession, Carolyn Houston (Melrose, N.Y.) hit another three-pointer and the visitors built up a five-point lead by the break, 32-27.

Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) hit a three-pointer early in the second half to send the Colonels on a 20-5 spree that saw them take their largest lead of the game at 55-34 with eight minutes remaining. The Nichols defense held Curry to only one field goal for the remainder of the game, while Wegrzynek poured in 11 for the Bison.

Curry commanded a 45-28 rebounding advantage, holding Nichols to eight offensive boards, while scoring 14 second-chance points off 19 of their own. The Bison used a deep bench to score 23 points and formulated 11 points in transition to Curry’s two.

Nichols is back in action on Saturday in a 1 p.m. CCC game at Western New England. Curry hosts Southern Vermont tomorrow in a 7 p.m. non-conference game. (Game recap courtesy of Nichols Sports information)
