Softball Splits Doubleheader, Walks Off Utica in Extras

Clermont, FL - The Curry Softball team faced their two toughest opponents of the season to this point on Thursday, and came away with a split, falling to Babson 7-2, but defeating Utica 5-4. Both opponents have wins over ranked opponents, as Babson defeated #6 Moravian earlier this season, and Utica defeated #11 Bethel earlier in the day.

Game One vs Babson

The Colonels got on the board first in this one, scoring two runs on an error by Babson's shortstop. But the Beavers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, and then scored runs in each of the next three innings, taking the game 7-2.

Jillian Rogers was a bright spot for the Colonels, as she went 3-4 from the plate, and pitched a complete game on the mound. She struck out five over six innings.

Game Two vs Utica

In a game that would close out the day at the Legends Way Softball Complex, the two teams put on a show. Whenever one team scored, the other had an answer. After the Pioneers broke open the scoring in the fourth, the Colonels responded with a run of their own on a Hailey King sacrifice fly. The Pioneers answered right back with two runs in the fifth. Curry matched those two runs in the bottom half of the inning with RBI singles from Sam King and Madelyn White, making it 3-3. White would get another RBI in the sixth, when she grounded out to first, allowing a run to score. Utica was threatening in the seventh, and the Colonels brought in their ace Jillian Rogers to close things out, as she entered with a runner on third. Her first pitch slipped out of her hand, and went to the backstop, allowing the Pioneers to tie things up. But Rogers was able to stay composed and get the final two outs of the inning without any further damage. After a scoreless bottom half, the game went to extras. The Pioneers sacrificed the placed runner on second to third, and had the go ahead run just 60 feet away. But Rogers struck out the next two batters, giving the Colonels a chance to walk things off in the bottom of the eighth. Jordan Ferullo left no doubt, as her leadoff RBI single won the game for the Colonels.

Ferullo was one of three Colonels to record two hits, joining White and Karlie Pontes. Caitlyn Wood pitched the first 6.1 innings, striking out four. Jillian Rogers would get the win, retiring all five batters she faced.

Up next - The Colonels will close out their Spring Break trip on Friday when they take on Ohio Wesleyan and Bowdoin at 11:30am and 1:30pm in Clermont, FL.
