Softball Continues Winning Ways

Leesburg, FL - The Curry Softball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday, defeating St. Mary's (Ind.) and Earlham. That moves the Colonels to 6-0 on the season. The six game win streak is the longest in program history since an eight game win streak in 2014.

Game One vs St. Mary's (Ind.)

The Colonels overcame six errors to defeat the Belles 13-7.

After the Belles scored twice in the first on an error, the Colonels cut the lead in half on a Jordan Ferullo RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. Another error in the second gave the Belles their two run lead back, but the third inning saw the Colonels fight back and score three runs. The first came on a Morgan Barmash RBI double, while the second came on a Natalia O'Kleasky RBI single. The third run, which gave the Colonels a lead, scored on a passed ball. But it was a short lived lead, as a pair of runs gave the Belles the lead back in the fourth.

The fourth inning saw the Colonels offense explode for seven runs, Barmash, O'Kleasky, Nina Covino, and Gracie Keyes all had RBI singles, while two other runs scored on wild pitches. The other run, the first of the inning, scored on a Jillian Rogers sacrifice fly.

The Belles would inch closer in the fifth with two more runs, but it wasn't enough, as the Colonels would add a run back in the both the fifth and sixth innings, one of which came on another Keyes RBI single.

Eleven different Curry players recorded a hit, with Madelyn White, Morgan Barmash, Natalia O'Kleasky, and Gracie Keyes each having two. Barmash also got the start in the circle, going three innings and allowing two earned run. She was relieved by Nina Covino, who picked up the win going 1.1 innings. Jillian Rogers then came in and pitched 2.2 innings to pick up the save. She allowed no walks or hits, and struck out four.

Game Two vs Earlham

While the first game of the day saw lots of runs, the second game saw runs come at a premium, as the Colonels won 3-2.

The Colonels struck first in the second, scoring on a dropped fly ball. They would double their lead in the next inning on a Mary Rodrigues RBI bunt single. They would add a third run in the fourth on an error. Potentially the most important moment of the game occurred in the second, as Earlham loaded the bases with nobody out. But Caitlyn Wood was able to work out of the jam, and allow no runs, giving the Colonels a huge boost. The Quakers made things interesting in the seventh, scoring two, and putting runners at second and third with just one out. But a line out to third produced a double play, ending the game, and giving Curry the win.

The lone Colonel with multiple hits was Mary Rodrigues, who had three. Caitlyn Wood picked up her third win in as many starts, going four scoreless innings, striking out three. Jillian Rogers picked up her second save of the day, going the final three innings, striking out six.

Up Next - After an off day on Wednesday, the Colonels will be back in action on Thursday when they take on Babson and Utica in Clermont, FL at 4pm and 6:15pm.
