Softball Wins Two More in Florida

Leesburg, FL - The Curry Colonels defeated both Susquehanna and Monmouth (Ill.) on Monday winning each game 2-0 and 11-3 respectively. The Colonels now sit at 4-0 on the season.

Game One vs Susquehanna

The story of the first game of the day was the pitching of Jillian Rogers. She pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks. She struck out a new career high 13 batters. She didn't allow a baserunner until a lead off walk in the fourth, and didn't allow a hit until two outs in the sixth.

Her dominance on the mound was needed, as the Colonels offense managed just four hits against good Susquehanna. But the Colonels were very patient at the plate drawing four walks, three of which came in the second inning, with a run scoring on one of them. They would also add a second run in the inning on a wild pitch. Those would be the only runs scored by eaither team in this game.

The four Curry hits came from Taylor McDermott, Sam King, Natalia O'Kleasky, and Mary Rodrigues.

Game Two vs Monmouth (Ill.)

Where in the first game of the day the pitching carried the Colonels, it was the offense that won the second game of the day. The Colonels scored in five of the six innings, defeating the Fighting Scots 11-3. The Colonels were also helped out quite a bit, as Monmouth made six errors.

The scoring opened up in the first on a Jillian Rogers RBI single. After the Scots took a lead in the second inning, the Colenels responded with three runs in the bottom half. Two scored on a pair of errors, while the other came on a Renee Gonneville sacrifice fly. Monmouth drew within one in the third, cutting the lead down to 4-3, but once again the Colonels answered in the bottom half with three runs. Just like the previous inning, errors played a key factor, as all three runs came in on mistakes. The Colonels began to open things up in the fourth, with a Morgan Barmash RBI single. The game ended in the sixth, as two runs scored on another Monmouth error, making the score 11-3, and enacting the mercy rule.

Jillian Rogers, Madelyn White, and Morgan Barmash each had two hits, while Barmash scored three runs. Karlie Pontes and Sam King each had two RBI. Caitlyn Wood got the win, going four innings for the Colonels. She struck out three. Nina Covino wrapped things up, pitching the final two innings, allowing no runs.

Up Next - The Colonels will return to Leesburg tomorrow to take on St. Mary's (Ind.) and Earlham. Those games will take place at 10am and 12:15pm.
