Softball Sweeps Doubleheader to Start the Season

Clermont, FL – The Curry softball team began their season with a doubleheader sweep of New England College and Rutgers-Newark on Sunday, defeating NEC 5-2, and Rutgers-Newark 10-1.

Game One vs New England College

New England College got out to an early lead in the first, scoring without a hit, as miscommunication on a wild pitch by the Colonels allowed the Pilgrims to score. But it was starting pitcher Jillian Rogers who put the Colonels ahead in the third with a two RBI single. She would them score on a Taylor McDermott RBI single. The Colonels would add to their lead in the following inning, as a pair of RBI singles from Renee Gonneville and Mary Rodrigues made it 5-1. That is how things would stay until the sixth when NEC added a run. But they were unable to get any closer, as Curry took the win.

Gonneville and Rogers each had two hits. Rogers also picked up the win on the mound, going six innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. She struck out six, and walked two. She was relieved by Morgan Barmash, who picked up a save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Game Two vs Rutgers-Newark

The Curry offense showed up immediately in the second game of the day, as Jordan Ferullo led the game off with a single. She would score immediately, as Jillian Rogers followed her with an RBI double. It was the same two who knocked in the next set of runs for the Colonels, as Ferullo had a two RBI single in the second, followed by Rogers who hit a no doubt HR to centerfield, making it 5-0. That is how things would stay until the fifth when Taylor McDermott had an RBI double to make it 6-0. After adding a seventh run in the sixth on an error. Sam King had the dagger, a bases loaded clearing double, making it 10-0. Rutgers-Newark would score a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to stop the game from being called, as the Colonels won 10-1 in six innings.

Ferullo led the way with three hits, while Rogers had the two extra base hits for three RBI. Hailey King also had two hits. Caitlyn Wood went the first five innings for the Colonels allowing five hits and just one walk. She struck out two.

Up Next – The Colonels will continue with their spring break, taking on Susquehanna and Monmouth (Ill.) on Monday. Those games will take place at 10am and 12:15am.
