Colonels Best Beacons in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BOSTON, Mass. - The Curry College Softball team swept non-conference opponent UMass Boston on the road Thursday afternoon.

With the sweep, Curry moves to 15-19-1 overall on the season.

Game 1: Curry 11, UMass Boston 6

The Colonels struck first in the opening matchup of the afternoon non-conference doubleheader, junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) notching an RBI single to center field to grant Curry a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The top of the second inning saw the Colonels continue to dominate, tallying six additional runs on six hits. Curry's Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) notched a two-RBI triple and scored on an error to push the Colonels to a 5-0 lead. Four at-bats later, Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) would grant the Colonels a 7-0 lead on a two-RBI single to right field.

A sacrifice fly from Jillian Rogers paired with two errors by UMass Boston saw two additional runs score for the visiting Colonels in the top of the third inning.

The hosting Beacons notched their first run of the day in the bottom of the third, Lauryn Bethea tallying an RBI single.

Curry furthered its lead in the top of the fifth as Madelyn White notched her fourth hit of the day, this time a two-RBI double to right field to give the Colonels an 11-1 lead.

Five runs from the hosting Beacons through the bottom of the fifth would not be enough to catch the Colonels' lead, closing out the opening matchup 11-6 in favor of Curry.

Game 2: Curry 12, UMass Boston 2

Curry's Jillian Rogers kept her bat warm heading into the second matchup of the day as she batted in the first two runs of the matchup on a double to left field, granting Curry an early 3-0 lead. A Madelyn White sacrifice fly would drive in Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.) to bring the Curry total to 4-0 in the top of the second inning.

The top of the third inning saw three additional runs for the Colonels, propelling Curry to a 7-0 lead over the hosting Beacons.

UMass Boston notched its first runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to chip away at the seven-run lead gained by the Colonels.

The Colonels continued to dominate into the fifth inning, Curry's Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) marking a three-RBI triple to right field to take an 11-2 lead over the hosts.

Curry's final run of the afternoon matchup came by way of an Alli Mansfield (Georgetown, Mass.) sacrifice fly deep into center field to score Taylor McDermott, bringing the Colonels' lead to 12-2 in the top of the fifth.

With no other scores from the hosting Beacons, Curry would claim the non-conference victory 12-2 through five innings in Boston, Mass.

Curry will be back in action Wednesday afternoon as they travel to face non-conference opponent Salem State University at 3:30 PM.
