Softball Sweeps Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Curry College softball team swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against Roger Williams University Friday afternoon at Paolino Field.

The Colonels won game one 7-3, before taking down the Hawks 6-1 in game two.

With the sweep, Curry moves to 13-17-1 overall and 4-8 in the CCC.

Game 1 - Curry 7, Roger Williams 3

Curry jumped out to an early advantage in game one thanks to a three-spot in the top of the first inning. The first two Curry runs crossed the plate on two separate errors with the bases loaded, before junior Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) knocked in a run with an RBI single to left field.

Roger Williams scored once each in the first, second, and third innings to tie the score, but the Colonels answered in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) walk and Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) double, junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) smacked a base hit up the middle to score Rogers from third and give Curry a 4-3 lead.

Two batters later, senior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) stretched Curry's lead to 6-3 with a two-run double down the right field line.

Curry added an insurance run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle from Rogers, plating freshman Mia Bianchi (New Milford, N.J.) from second, giving the game its final score of 7-3.

Rogers threw a complete game in the circle, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.

Offensively, Curry was paced by White, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. McDermott also recorded a pair of hits in the victory.

Game 2 - Curry 6, Roger WIlliams 1

Roger Williams took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first, but it would prove to be the Hawks' last run of the afternoon.

In the top of the second inning, Schwartz drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) to knot the score at 1-1.

In the third, the Colonels broke the contest open by plating four runs. McDermott put Curry on top 3-1 with a two-run double, before White belted a two-run bomb over the left field wall to give the visitors a 5-1 advantage.

White stayed red hot with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Colonels ahead 6-1.

Junior pitcher Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) had a strong outing in the circle for Curry, going the distance and allowing just one earned run on seven hits to pick up her fifth victory of the season.

White led Curry for the second game in a row with a pair of hits to go along with three runs batted in and a run scored. McDermott went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Rogers crossed home plate twice.

Next up for the Colonels, they will host Gordon College on Saturday for a critical CCC doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 11 a.m.
