Softball Rallies in Game Two for Split with Wentworth

MILTON, Mass. - After a one-sided defeat in game one, the Curry College softball team rebounded in game two to split a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with Wentworth Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Leopards took game one by a score of 13-1, before the Colonels won game two 4-2.

With the split, Curry moves to 11-12 overall on the season and 2-4 in the CCC.

Game 1 - Wentworth 13, Curry 1

Wentworth bookended the first game of the afternoon with six-run innings in the first and seventh to knock off the Colonels by a final of 13-1.

The Leopards belted a pair of three-run homers in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 6-0 advantage after half an inning. They added one more in the top of the third on an RBI single to center field.

Wentworth added six more on seven hits in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) scored Curry's only run in the bottom of the frame on a passed ball, but the Colonels could not close the gap any further.

Sophomore Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the Colonels with a pair of hits, while Rogers and junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) each chipped in one hit.

Game 2 - Curry 4, Wentworth 2

Curry rebounded quickly to win a 4-2 thriller over the Leopards to close out the afternoon.

Wentworth broke the ice with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning on a solo home run and an RBI single.

The Colonels got one back in the bottom of the third when senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) slapped an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.).

The hosts posted a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the afternoon. McDermott tied the score with an RBI double off the center field fence, before sophomore Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) put Curry ahead on an RBI fielder's choice. Pontes gave the Colonels an insurance run with an RBI groundout to close out the three-run frame.

Rogers retired the next three batters after a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh to earn her first save of the season in the victory.

Junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) earned the win in the circle for the Colonels, allowing just the two earned runs on eight hits with no walks in six innings pitched for Curry. She improves to 4-4 on the season.

In the field, Bussiere made a pair of stellar diving catches in center to help keep the Colonels within striking distance when they were still trailing. She was also one of six players to record a hit on offense for the hosts.

Curry will return to action on Tuesday, continuing a six-game home stand by hosting Bridgewater State University at D. Forbes Will Field. First pitch in game one is slated for 3 p.m.
