Softball Victorious in One of Two at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Curry College softball team won one of two Commonwealth Coast Conference contests against Nichols College Monday afternoon. The Colonels fell 5-3 in game one, before rebounding with a 4-3 victory in the second game.

With the split, Curry moves to 10-11 overall on the season and earns its first CCC victory of the season, moving to 1-3 in league play.

Game 1 - Nichols 5, Curry 3

The Colonels were undone by a four-run bottom of the fourth inning as Nichols came from behind to knock off Curry by a pair in game one.

After Nichols took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Curry tied the score in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle from sophomore Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.), plating rookie Samantha King (Stafford Springs, Conn.).

In the top of the fourth, Curry took the lead on an RBI single from junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.). White came around to score on an RBI double from Pontes later in the frame, putting the Colonels on top 3-1.

A single, a two-run double, and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave Nichols the lead for good.

Junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) took the loss for the Colonels, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) impressed in relief, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.

Pontes was the only Colonel with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Samantha King went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Game 2 - Curry 4, Nichols 3

Curry rallied with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to salvage a split with the Bison in game two.

The Colonels drew first blood with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Emma Burke (Beverly, Mass.) opened the scoring when she drove in Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) on a single to right field. Burke scored later in the frame when senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) reached on an error.

The Bison took the lead for the first time with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and a single score in the bottom of the third, but the advantage would not last.

Senior Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) leveled the score in the top of the fifth with an RBI double to center field, before Pontes came through in the top of the sixth with a game-winning RBI double down the right field line.

Seven Colonels all finished with one hit in the victory, paced by Burke, who went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a run batted, and Bussiere, who went 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.

In the circle, sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing just two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in the victory.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return home for a conference doubleheader against Wentworth on Saturday afternoon. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. from D. Forbes Will Field.
