Softball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Curry College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon with Albertus Magnus College at the Shea Softball Complex.

Curry won game one 7-5 in eight innings, before dropping game two 4-3.

With the split, Curry moves to 8-7 overall on the season.

Game 1 - Curry 7, Albertus Magnus 5 (8 Innings)

What began as a pitcher's dual turned into a high-scoring extra innings thriller, with the Colonels prevailing in eight innings.

Neither team scoring until the top of the fifth inning, when Curry sophomore Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) drove in a pair on a double to left field, putting the visitors ahead 2-0.

After Albertus Magnus cut the deficit to one on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, Curry got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when freshman Emma Burke (Beverly, Mass.) crossed the plate on an Albertus throwing error.

Curry could not hold onto the lead however, as the Falcons tied the score on a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) delivered the clutch hit for the Colonels in the top of the eighth with a two-run double to put Curry back on top by a score of 5-3. Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) and Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) each notched RBI singles in the inning to give Curry a 7-3 lead heading to the bottom of the frame.

The Falcons recorded a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, but could not complete the comeback as Curry held on for the 7-5 win.

Rogers, O'Kleasky, and senior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) all led the way for Curry with two hits each. Junior Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) scored two runs for the Colonels in the win.

In the circle, Rogers allowed just three earned runs on 10 hits over eight innings with one strikeout to earn her third win of the season.

Game 2 - Albertus Magnus 4, Curry 3

A back-and-forth game two went the way of the Falcons as the hosts battled back for a split of the doubleheader.

Curry opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Bussiere scored the game's first run on an Albertus throwing error, followed by a Rogers RBI single to stretch Curry's lead to 2-0.

The Colonel lead only lasted until the bottom of the frame, when two runs scored for Albertus Magnus on an error, knotting the score at 2-2. The hosts scored again in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to go ahead 3-2.

O'Kleasky tied the score at three in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout, but Albertus scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to seal the win.

Bussiere led Curry with two hits in the defeat, and scored two of her team's three runs.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return home to host Fitchburg State University on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m.
