Softball Splits Doubleheader to Close Out Spring Break

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Curry College softball team closed out its South Carolina Spring Break trip with a split in a doubleheader at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex on Friday morning. 

The Colonels opened the day by defeating Cairn University by a final score of 3-2, before falling to FDU-Florham 8-0 in five innings in game two.

With the split, Curry wraps up its trip with an overall record of 5-4.

 

Game 1 - Curry 3, Cairn 2

The Colonels rallied from two down after half an inning to earn its fourth consecutive win on its trip.

The Highlanders wasted no time taking the lead in the contest, scoring twice in the top of the first to take a 2-0 advantage.

Curry got one run back in the bottom of the second. With two outs and nobody on, sophomore Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) started a rally with a double to center field, before freshman Emma Burke (Beverly, Mass.) sliced an RBI single to right field, putting Curry on the board.

The score remained 2-1 Highlanders until the bottom of the fifth inning, when junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) tied the score on a two-out triple, driving in sophomore Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.). A batter later, senior catcher Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) put Curry ahead with a base hit to right field, giving the Colonels a 3-2 lead.

After a rocky top of the first inning, junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) settled in nicely to earn her second win of the season. She finished her outing allowing two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts in a complete game. After the first inning, she threw six shutout innings, allowing only two hits.

Leading the way offensively for Curry was McDermott, who finished the game batting 3-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Senior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) went 2-for-3 in the victory.

 

Game 2 - FDU Florham 8, Curry 0 (5 Innings)

Curry struggled for offense in its final game of the trip, and FDU Florham capitalized by defeating Curry 8-0 in five innings. 

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Devils put up three runs to take a 3-0 lead. FDU Florham went on to score two in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the fifth to claim the victory. 

Curry mustered only two hits on offense in the contest, coming off the bats of O'Kleasky and junior Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.). 

In the circle, sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return to New England for a road trip to Mass. Maritime on Wednesday. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
