Softball Drops Pair in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Curry College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The Colonels opened the day by falling to Wilson by a final score of 9-8, before being doubled up by SUNY Poly 4-2 in the second game.

With the sweep, Curry falls to 1-3 overall on the season.

Game 1 - Wilson 9, Curry 8

Curry was at the wrong end of a walk-off, as Wilson rallied to knock off the Colonels in their final at-bat.

The Colonels opened the scoring by putting up a pair in the top of the second inning. Freshman Amelya Melchione (Braintree, Mass.) gave Curry a 1-0 lead when she scored from third on a wild pitch, and later in the same at bat, senior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in freshman Gracie Martineau (Westminster, Mass.) with a base hit through the right side.

Wilson scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, but the advantage was short-lived as the Colonels scored four of their own in the top of the fourth. Martineau, Samantha King (Stafford Springs, Conn.), and Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) all recorded RBI singles in the inning, with a fourth run scoring on a throwing error to give the Colonels a 6-4 lead.

Wilson leveled the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Colonels again jumped in front in the top of the sixth on a two-run single from junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.), going ahead 8-6.

Wilson scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth to keep within striking distance, before Alyssa Wenger delivered a two-out, two-run walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Phoenix.

Curry roped 13 hits in the defeat, led by Schwartz, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Melchione and Martineau also each recorded two hits for the Colonels.

Game 2 - SUNY Poly 4, Curry 2

Curry outhit SUNY Poly by a margin of 6-5, but could not capitalize in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats.

SUNY Poly jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings before the Colonels broke the ice. Schwartz drove in Curry's first run of the game with a safety squeeze, bringing home sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) from third base to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Two innings later, junior Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) got the Colonels to within one with another safety squeeze, scoring sophomore Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.) from third base, but Curry got no closer. An insurance run in the top of the sixth inning sealed SUNY Poly's two-run victory.

Rogers and Samantha King led the way for Curry offensively with two hits apiece. In the circle, Rogers threw 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Next up for the Colonels, they will continue their Myrtle Beach trip with a doubleheader Thursday against Franciscan and Maine-Presque Isle. First pitch against the Barons is slated for 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Owls.
