Softball Splits with Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with Gordon College on Friday afternoon at the Gordon Softball Field. Curry took game one 2-1, before falling 11-0 in five innings in game two.

With the split, Curry moves to 7-30 overall on the season and 3-13 in CCC action.

Game 1 – Curry 2, Gordon 1

Curry rallied late in the first contest of the afternoon to secure a narrow one-run win.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the sixth inning, pinch runner Caitlin Magnuson (Thomaston, Conn.) scored on a Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) reach-on-error to level the score at 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, junior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) delivered the clutch hit. With Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) standing on first base with two away, Schwartz roped a double to left center, scoring her classmate to put the Colonels ahead for the first time all afternoon.

Sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.), who started the game for Curry but was relieved by freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) after four innings, returned to the circle in the bottom of the seventh and slammed the door shut on the Fighting Scots. Wood induced a pop-up, a groundout, and a strikeout to earn her second save of the season.

Wood allowed one earned run on six hits in five innings pitched with four strikeouts. King was credited with the win, throwing two hitless and scoreless innings in relief.

Junior Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) and freshman Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.) led Curry offensively with two hits apiece.

Game 2 – Gordon 11, Curry 0 (5 Innings)

Gordon got the bats going early and often in game two to secure a split.

The Fighting Scots scored two in the first, six in the second, and three in the third to put the contest out of reach in the early innings.

Curry scattered six hits in the defeat, but was unable to capitalize on its offensive opportunities. Senior Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) recorded Curry's lone extra-base hit, a one-out double in the top of the second inning, while sophomore Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) reached base twice with a single and a walk.

Curry will close out its regular season on Saturday, hosting Western New England University for Senior Day starting at 12 p.m. at D. Forbes Will Field.
