MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team lost twice to UMass Boston Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field. Curry lost game one 12-5 and game two 11-1.

With the sweep, Curry falls to 5-26 overall on the season.

Game 1 - UMass Boston 12, Curry 5

Curry erased two one-run deficits in the early stages of the afternoon's first game, but a seven-run fifth inning for the Beacons proved to be too much to overcome.

After the Colonels surrendered the first run in the top of the first, they quickly leveled the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame. Junior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) stole third base, but the throw to third was mishandled by the UMass Boston shortstop, allowing Bussiere to trot home.

In the bottom of the fourth, with Curry again trailing by a run, freshman Karlie Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) recorded a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly to center field to tie the score at 2-2.

After the Beacons scored seven in the fifth and three in the seventh, Curry mounted a small comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short. Junior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) notched a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded, followed by an RBI groundout from junior Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.), but the rally would end at three runs.

Sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) took the loss in game one, allowing seven earned over 4.1 innings.

Bussiere finished the contest with two hits and two runs scored to lead Curry at the plate.

Game 2 - UMass Boston 11, Curry 1

The UMass Boston bats stayed red hot in game two, as the Beacons were able to close out the non-league sweep.

UMass Boston scored at least once in every inning except the second and the fourth, and took an 8-0 lead to the bottom of the sixth. With her team needing a run to extend the contest, sophomore Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) came in from third on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-1.

McDermott and Schwartz each went 2-for-3 to lead Curry offensively in the second game of the twinbill. The only other Curry hit in the game came off the bat of freshman Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.).

Curry will return to the diamond on Saturday with a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest on the road at the University of New England. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
