Softball Falls Twice to Suffolk

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team suffered a pair of defeats to Suffolk University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at D. Forbes Will Field. Curry fell 6-4 in game one and 6-0 in game two.

With the defeats, Curry falls to 5-24 overall and 1-9 in CCC play.

Game 1 - Suffolk 6, Curry 4

Curry jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the day, but was unable to hold onto the advantage as the visitors rallied for the victory.

The Colonels scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. An RBI single from sophomore Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) opened the scoring, followed a batter later by an RBI groundout from freshman Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.).

Suffolk took the lead with a three-spot in the top of the third, but Curry battled back to retake the lead. McDermott leveled the score in the bottom of the third with her second RBI single of the day. An inning later, junior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) put Curry on top on a squeeze play, scoring freshman Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.) from third base.

The Rams battled back however, scoring twice in the top of the sixth and once more in the top of the seventh to rally for the win.

Sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) allowed five earned runs to take the loss for Curry. Offensively, McDermott, Bussiere, and Okleasky all finished game one with two hits.

Game 2 - Suffolk 6, Curry 0

Curry struggled to get its offense going in game two, but it was a defensive play for the Colonels that had D. Forbes Will Field buzzing.

With nobody out in the top of the first inning, and runners on second and third, Suffolk's Savannah Scripter hit a flyball to center field. The ball was caught by Bussiere, who made a perfect relay throw to first baseman Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.), who turned and threw out the runner at the plate. Catcher Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) alertly looked to third, making the throw on to McDermott to complete the triple play.

Bussiere went 3-for-3 in game two to finish the day a perfect 5-for-5. Curry also got hits from Buckner, Okleasky, and freshman Maddy Smith (Everett, Mass.) in the defeat.

Freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss for Curry in the circle, allowing six earned runs while striking out three.

Next up for Curry, they will host UMass Boston for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
