Softball Falls Twice to Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Curry College softball team suffered a pair of defeats to Bridgewater State University in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. Curry fell 5-2 in game one and 7-4 in game two.

With the defeats, Curry falls to 4-19 overall on the season.

Game 1 - Bridgewater State 5, Curry 2

Bridgewater State used a walkoff three-run home run from Emma Healy to finish a comeback and stun the Colonels in game one.

Curry led 2-0 after two innings after plating single runs in the first and second innings. An RBI infield single from Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, scoring freshman Natalia Okleasy (Coventry, R.I.) from third.

In the second, Curry pitcher Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) helped her own cause by blasting her first collegiate home run over the left field fence to put the Colonels on top 2-0.

Bridgewater State evened the score in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of RBI singles, setting up Healy for the walkoff long ball in the bottom of the seventh.

Rogers took the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs on nine hits.

Curry notched 10 hits in the defeat, with a pair each from Okleasky, Willis, and Rogers.

Game 2 - Bridgewater State 7, Curry 4

Curry's game two comeback bid fell short in the top of the seventh inning as the hosts were able to finish off the sweep.

The Colonels opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from senior Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.), but a trio of runs from Bridgewater State in the bottom of the inning made Curry's advantage shortlived.

Bridgewater State scored once more in the second and three times in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Rogers continued her strong day at the plate with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 7-2. Willis also notched her second RBI hit of the day in the frame, and Rogers would score from third on a caught stealing, but that would be the extent of the Curry offense on the afternoon.

Freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss for Curry in game two, allowing four earned runs over 3.2 innings. Sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) looked sharp in relief, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in 2.1 shutout innings.

For the second consecutive game, Rogers led Curry with a pair of hits offensively.

Next up for Curry, they will return home for a Saturday afternoon Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill at D. Forbes Will Field against Roger William University. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
