Softball Swept By Nichols

MILTON, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team picked up two victories over Curry College on Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field, prevailing 11-3 in five innings and 8-2 in the nightcap.

The Bison climbed to 13-7 on the year and 8-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Colonels dropped to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in league play.

Game One – Nichols 11, Curry 3 (5 innings)

The home side produced three runs in the bottom of the first inning to establish a 3-0 advantage. Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) tripled dwon the right field line, which scored classmate Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.). Freshman Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, which brought around Newcomb. White would round out the scoring in the frame when she crossed the dish on a wild pitch.

The Bison scored in each of the next four innings. Graduate student Amanda Alioto (Patchogue, N.Y.) singled to the pitcher to bring around junior Mackenzie Bourgault (Fairhaven, Mass.) in the second to make the score 3-1.

Nichols tacked on three more in the third. Freshman Hailey Bogusz (Montague, Mass.) delivered a two-RBI triple to right field to tie the contest and graduate student Alexandria Rodi (Cranston, R.I.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Bogusz.

The Bison added five more in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 11-3 final.

In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Alyssa Ouellette (Auburn, N.H.) registered her seventh victory of the season and finished with three strikeouts. Sophomore Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.) was credited with the loss. She gave up six runs (all earned) on eight hits to go along with two walks.

Game Two – Nichols 8, Curry 2

The visitors generated two runs in the top of the second to open up a 2-0 lead. Graduate student Taylor Commesso (Hingham, Mass.) singled up the middle to score junior Samantha Kostek (Oxford, Conn.). Sophomore Allie Brown (Middlebury, Conn.) scored the other run in the inning on a failed pickoff attempt.

Nichols manufactured three runs in the third to stretch the margin to 5-0. Brown scored on a throwing error while freshman Lilly Fangel (Natick, Mass.) singled to center to plate Commesso and senior Colleen Callahan (Billerica, Mass.).

Curry got both of their runs in the fourth. White hit her first career home run to cut the deficit to four, 5-1 and classmate Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) would later score on a wild pitch.

The Bison plated three in the seventh with one swing of the bat to stretch the advantage to 8-2, the eventual final. Commesso connected on a three-run homer to left center for the final runs of the contest.

Junior Candice Nelson (Oxford, Mass.) tossed a complete game to improve to 5-4 in the pitcher's circle. She fanned six batters while scattering seven hits and five walks. Newcomb fell to 3-4 on the season in the circle. She surrendered eight runs on nine hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout.

The two teams will play again in a doubleheader at Curry on Wednesday, April 14 starting at 2:30 p.m.
