Softball Goes 1-1 in a Conference Twinbill at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. — Freshman Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) hit the game-winning double in a comeback 10-9 win over visiting Curry in game two of a doubleheader split with the Colonels. Kline also earned a win in relief of the Scots furious rally after taking a loss as a starter in a 9-2 game-one loss to the hot-hitting Colonels.

Game One

The Colonels jumped on the Fighting Scots in the very first frame with four straight hits after Kline got the leadoff batter to groundout. Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.), Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) and Marissa Bruno (Milford, Mass.) each singled before Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) brought them all home with a grand slam. Curry added another in the second inning when Nolan scored on a passed ball by catcher Hope Zigterman (Villa Park, Ill.).

The Fighting Scots got one back in the bottom of the second inning when Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) led off the inning with a triple. Kline singled her home on the next pitch to give the Scots their first run of the day.

Curry scored twice more in the top of the fourth inning on a variety of errors committed by Gordon. Nolan earned a leadoff single, but an error allowed LaRosa to take base and Nolan to score later in the inning. Another passed ball and a groundout eventually allowed Bruno—who had been hit by a pitcher—to score as well.

The Colonels outscored the Scots 2-1 the rest of the way and earned their fifth conference victory of the year. Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) struckout eight Scots and allowed only five hits in seven innings of work, while Kline took the loss for Gordon.

Game Two

The final game of the doubleheader proved to be a high-scoring affair with Curry putting three quick runs on the board over the first two innings. Lambert and Felzmann drove in three runs on a pair of doubles in each inning to give the Colonels a 3-0 advantage.

Not to be outdone, Gordon answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Kline knocked in Pepper for the second time on the day, but this time with a bomb over the fence in right field, nearly hitting the scoreboard. A few Curry errors and some small ball from the Scots eventually led to a RBI single for Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) to tie the score at three.

Curry responded with four runs in the top of the third inning, nearly batting around in the frame. Lambert and Bruno singled to kick start the inning before LaRosa used a sacrifice fly to move Lambert to third base. Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.), Caitlin Blanchard (Warwick, R.I.) and Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) all singled on consecutive plays to score four runs between them and take a commanding 7-3 lead.

Once again the Fighting Scots countered with a rally of their own. Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) singled up the middle of the diamond to start the inning and Pepper continued a strong day with a towering home run to centerfield. Lambert walked the next two Gordon batters and was replaced with Jordan Lizotte (Rehoboth, Mass.).

The switch worked for the next two batters, as Lizotte was able to pop up Brie Roberts (Center Conway, N.H.) and strikeout Kiersten Bieren (Groton, Mass.). However, Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) hit a ball just over Lizotte's head that died on contact, allowing everyone to be safe and scoring Kline. Curry's shortstop tried to make a play to get Unumb out at first, but underthrew the ball to allow Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) to also score on the play.

Curry scored a run in the fourth and sixth innings to carry a 9-7 lead entering the bottom half of the sixth. Gordon mounted a furious rally, capped off by a 2-RBI double by Kline to the centerfield fence to give the Scots their first lead of the day.

Oatway led off the seventh with a single, but Kline was able to retire the final three batters to clinch an important CCC win for the Fighting Scots. Lizotte was credited with the loss, her second of the year.

Curry (8-11) has two days off before returning to the field on Thursday at home against Western New England. Gordon has a non-conference doubleheader with Regis tomorrow beginning at 3:30 p.m. (Recap courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
