Softball Splits a Non-Conference Doubleheader with Visiting UMass Boston
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and UMass Boston split a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels came from behind to take the opener, 7-6, before the Beacons rebounded with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap. Curry now stands at 18-15 on the season, while UMass Boston now owns a 15-13 record.

GAME ONE

In the opener, the Beacons jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Senior Lisa Polsonetti began the scoring in the top of the first with a two-run home run to centerfield. Junior Sue Killilea and Polsonetti then contributed an RBI double and single respectively in the second.

The Colonels tied the score with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run home run to left field by sophomore Chelsey Munsey.

UMass Boston went ahead 5-4 in the fourth, thanks to a run-scoring base hit from senior Maria Nasta. Curry responded in its half of the fourth, taking its first lead (6-5) of the day when senior Caitlin Luquet and junior Mikaela Carney each stroked RBI singles.

The Beacons drew even in the top of the sixth when Killilea doubled and later scored on a throwing error. But the Colonels pushed across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Valarie LaSala.

Munsey and freshman Ariel LaRosa each had three hits for the hosts. Polsonetti had three hits and three RBI.

Freshman Taylor Ahearn (9-6) picked up the win in relief of classmate Deanna McMahon. Ahearn tossed a perfect 1 2/3 innings to close the game. McMahon went the first 5 1/3, surrendering 12 hits, five earned runs and one walk while striking out two.

Senior Kara Willis started for the visitors, hurling four innings, and allowing nine hits, six earned runs and three walks. Freshman Michelle Zullo (8-5) took the loss, pitching the final two innings, giving up three hits, a walk and one earned run while striking out one.

GAME TWO

In the nightcap, the Beacons got all the runs they would need in the third inning, scoring four times including a solo home run to centerfield by freshman Amanda Perry.

Leading 5-0 in the top of the seventh, UMass Boston put the game out of reach with five more runs, highlighted by a two-run double by senior Jaci Goodwin.
Sophomore Natalia Bouyea led the Beacons with three hits, while Nasta and Goodwin each drove in a pair of runs. Zullo (9-5) was the complete-game shutout winner, allowing just one hit and one walk in her seven innings of work. Sophomore Jennifer Lundstrom (4-5) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven hits, four earned runs and two walks over three innings.

Both teams resume play on Saturday with conference doubleheaders at noon. Curry travels to Salve Regina while UMass Boston hosts Plymouth State.
