Softball Swept by Visiting Endicott in CCC Action
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College dropped a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) games to visiting Endicott College on Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Gulls took the opener, 11-0 in five innings, then squeezed by in the nightcap, 2-1. With the victory in Game 1, Endicott Head Coach Mark Veilleux earned his 500th career win at the helm of the Gulls’ softball program.

In the first game, the visitors got all of the runs they would need in the top of the first, scoring three times. The key hit was provided by sophomore Alexandra Moise (No. Reading, Mass.), who stroked a two-RBI double to left and later scored.

In the second frame, the Gulls took a 4-0 lead after junior Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) scored on a passed ball. Endicott added five more runs to its lead in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run to right center off the bat off junior Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.). The Gulls scored their final two runs in the fourth, including a solo homer by sophomore Kelley Michael (Ipswich, Mass.) to left center.

Sophomore Nell O’Connor (Harwich, Mass.) picked up the win, improving to 6-2 on the season. O’Connor held Curry scoreless over all five innings, allowing five hits while striking out three. Sophomore Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, Mass.) absorbed the loss, surrendering five hits and eight runs (4 earned), while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings of work in the circle.

In the nightcap, the Colonels took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after sophomore Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) hit a solo home run to left. Endicott tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth frame after junior Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) crossed the plate. In the following inning, the Gulls scored the final run of the game and took the lead after junior Nicole Devlin (Dudley, Mass.) hit an RBI single to left to bring home Moise.

Sophomore Danielle LaRocque (Averill Park, N.Y.) improved to 4-3 on the season. From the circle, she tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and just one earned run. Freshman Cam Sprague (Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded the final out of the game to pick up her first save on the season.

Despite a solid effort, freshman Deanna McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season. McMahon allowed eight hits and two runs, while striking out two in 5 1/3 innings of work.

With both wins, first-place Endicott improves to 17-11 overall and 11-1 in CCC action, while the Colonels fall to 17-14 and 6-8 in conference play.

The Gulls resume play on Wednesday, travelling to Wellesley for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m., while Curry hosts UMass Boston at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
