The game featured a match-up of freshman starting pitchers from Salem, Mass. - Suffolk's Sarah Chasse and Curry's Taylor Ahearn. It was the Rams who got to Ahearn for three runs in the top of the second, and Chasse struck the big blow, driving in two with a two-out double to left center.
Suffolk added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as rookie Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) brought home classmate Chasse, who had an infield single and a stolen base to set up Rosa's RBI single up the middle.
Chasse tossed the complete-game three-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven over seven innings. She was also the hitting star, going 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot with a run scored and two runs driven in.
The Colonels got one hit apiece from seniors Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Joneiha Veiga (Brockton, Mass.), and sophomore Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, Mass.). Ahearn went the distance, allowing nine hits, two earned runs and a walk while fanning four.
Suffolk returns to action on Friday, traveling to Mount Ida for a 3:00 p.m. conference doubleheader. Curry resumes play on Saturday, visiting Nichols for a league twin bill starting at noon.
