Softball Earns a Split at CCC Rival Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College Softball team split its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon with a nine-inning, 3-2 loss followed by a 10-6 win.

The Hawks remain at .500 in the conference (2-2) while moving to 5-12 overall. Curry also sits at 2-2 in the CCC with a 10-6 overall record.

In the opener, the Hawks took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) brought in Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) and Kaitlyn Costa (Cranston, R.I.) with a two-RBI single to put the Hawks on the board.

In the third inning, Curry cut the lead in half. Valarie Lasala (Seaford, N.Y.) hit a single to right with Heather Carrier on second base. Carrier would come around to score on an overthrow to the cutoff. Two innings later, Taryn Vigeant (Terryville, Conn.) led off the frame with a triple to right center. She later scored on a two-out RBI single by Lasala to tie the game at two.

Both teams remained scoreless in the sixth and seventh to send the game into extras. In the eight, both teams sacrificed the tie-breaker runner over to third but left the person stranded on base.

The ninth inning saw Curry ground into an inning-ending double play, with the Colonels’ runner getting thrown out at third by Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) trying to take third on a groundout to second. Peoples would then become the heroine in the bottom half of the frame with the game-winning RBI single to right.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) went the distance for RWU, pitching nine innings while allowing two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Peoples was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Atkinson was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 8.1 innings. Lasala went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Vigeant added a hit and a run.

The nightcap saw the Colonels jump out the gate with two quick scores on RBIs by Caitlin Luquet (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.). RWU came back with one in the second on an RBI single by Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) but Curry tacked on two more in the third. The Hawks answered with runs by Pirez and Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) in the bottom of the inning to come back within one.

Curry would go up by three on back-to-back RBI doubles by Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) and Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, Mass.). In the fifth, the Hawks looked poised for a big inning after getting the first two batters on base but managed only one run in the frame to make it a 4-6 deficit.

In the seventh, Curry plated four runners for a comfortable 10-4 lead on a pair of two-RBI doubles in the inning. The Hawks scored twice in their final at-bat but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) earned the win, allowing six runs (one earned) in seven innings with five strikeouts. Lasala was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Allie Carver (Marlborough, Mass.) had a pinch-hit two-RBI double.

Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) allowed six runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings of work but went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate. Pirez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Castro was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Roger Williams hosts Gordon on Friday, while Curry travels to Salem State on Tuesday. (Recap courtesy of RWU Sports Information)
