Softball Goes 1-1 vs. Conference Rival Western New England

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team split a conference doubleheader with Western New England College (WNEC), capturing the opener 6-5, but losing the nightcap, 11-1 in six innings. The Colonels are now 6-8 overall and 3-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), while the Golden Bears now stand at 4-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

GAME ONE

Curry put the first two runs on the board in the third inning. The first run came after Heather Carrier (Scarborough, ME) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Valarie LaSala (Seaford, NY). Janelle Mayo (Worcester, MA) followed with a single to center field to plate Megan Flaherty (Medway, MA). WNEC immediately responded in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs to tie the game. Ashley Stolarik (Wilbraham, MA) brought home the first run for the Golden Bears with a double to right field, scoring Jeana Longo (Schenectady, NY). One out later, Tricia Breault (Millville, MA) singled to left to bring home Stolarik.

Both teams were then held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Colonels plated three runs to take a 6-3 lead. The highlight of the inning was a two-RBI double to center field by Flaherty. WNEC again tied the game at 6-6 in the seventh inning, scoring three runs. An error by the first baseman allowed Breault to score the first run of the inning. The other two runs of the inning came from a pair of RBI doubles off the bats of Maria Francese (Dalton, MA) and Longo.

Curry started the bottom of the seventh with an out, but then Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, MA) singled to shortstop. Munsey then advanced to second after a groundout to second base. Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, MA) followed the out with a single to right field to bring home the game winning run.

Freshman Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) picked up the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on ten hits and striking out eight.  Felzmann led the offense by going 4-4 with one run and one RBI.
Breault, Longo and Stolarik each had two hits, while sophomore Rachelle Fecteau (East Lyme, CT) took the loss.

GAME TWO

In the second game, Stolarik singled to center field in the second inning to bring home the first run of the game. The Golden Bears added three more runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to put WNEC ahead 7-0.

The Golden Bears went on to score four more runs in the sixth off a grand slam by Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, MA). The Colonels only run came in the bottom of the sixth, after Stacey Norton (Alfred, ME) score on an error by the first baseman.

Breault collected two hits, two runs and two RBI, while Wyrwa had one hit and four RBI. Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) allowed three hits and one run, while recording eight strikeouts in the win. Carrier, Mayo and Norton each accounted for one of Curry’s three hits. Mayo allowed four earned runs on eight hits, while recording four strikeouts in the loss.

Curry travels to Nichols on Sunday in a conference doubleheader for a 1:00 p.m. start. WNEC travels to Smith College on Wednesday for a single seven-inning game at 4:30 p.m.
