Softball Explodes for 26 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Eastern Nazarene
QUINCY, Mass.  – Curry College swept Eastern Nazarene, 12-0 and 14-8, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Quincy. The Colonels racked up 27 hits to overpower the Lions and lift their season record to 15-16 overall and 10-8 in the TCCC. The Lions fell to 3-25 overall and 2-18 in league play.

In the opener, the Colonels jumped out in front as Samantha Velezis (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled down the left-field line. Then with two outs an Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, MA) fly to center was mishandled allowing Velezis to score and Felzmann to reach second base. Curry's next batter, Amanda Peters (East Bridgewater, Mass.),  launched the first of her two home runs on the day, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Colonels plated seven more runs on five hits, as the Lions’ Christine Tucker broke up Peters’ no-hit bid with a single up the middle in the bottom of the inning. Tucker reached second on a bunt sacrifice by Antoinette Carradine (Honolulu, HI) but could not get any further.

The Colonels continued to hit the Lions’ pitching, collecting two more runs in the fifth, to lead 12-0. The Lions threatened in the bottom of the inning with runners on second and third, but a two-out groundout to second ended the game by rule.

Samantha Velezis led the Colonels at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort, one RBI and three runs scored. Peters went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. She also threw five innings, striking out two and allowing three hits, improving her record on the mound to 5-9.

The nightcap started with a walk to Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) who came around to score on a Janelle Mayo (Worcester, Mass.) double.  Mayo then crossed home plate on a RBI single by Peters.
The Colonels’ Valarie LaSala (Seaford, NY) walked to start the second, followed by a Laikyn Nadolny (East Bridgewater, Mass.) single and a Jackman double that scored LaSala.  Nadolny came across on an infield groundout and Jackman made it 6-0 when she crossed home from third on a passed ball.

Curry scored its 14 runs on 16 hits, led by Jackman, who went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Peters went 2-for-3 with a walk, four RBI and a run scored.  Felzmann went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Mayo (8-5) went the distance, allowing 11 hits and eight runs while striking out five and walking none.

Eastern Nazarene resumes play at Salve Regina on Friday, April 23, while Curry visits Anna Maria for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader on April 21. (Game recaps courtesy of ENC Sports Information)
