Men's Tennis Tripped Up By Johnson & Wales

MILTON, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men's tennis team collected its second straight win by defeating Curry College, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-league matchup at the Trent J. Scott '96 Tennis Courts. The Wildcats move to 3-2 overall while the Colonels fall to 0-5 on the season.  

Freshman Alexander Rohana (Providence, R.I.) and junior Franz Fonck (Santo Domingo, DR) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over junior Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and senior Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.). Sophomore Gianni Rodrigues (Milton, Mass.) and freshman Steven Heizler (Lawrenceville, Ga.) edged senior Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and freshman Lorenzo Russo (Lynnfield, Mass.) by an 8-7 final at No. 2. Rodrigues and Heizler pulled out a 12-10 tiebreak to claim the point. Sophomores Brandon Case (Auburn, Maine) and Robert Michalofsky (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) bested senior Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) and freshman Timothy O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) at No. 3 by a final of 8-6.

Curry claimed two points in singles play. Roach secured the victory at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rohana. Fonck got by Stento at No. 2 by identical 6-3 set scores. Rodrigues and Hefler needed three sets to settle things at No. 3. Rodrigues captured the first set 6-3 before dropping the second by a 6-4 score. Rodrigues responded with a 10-5 victory in a third set super tiebreak. Two of the final three singles matches reached three sets. Heizler topped Russo 4-6, 6-2, and 6-4. Ritucci claimed the final point for the Colonels with a 7-6, 6-3 straight set victory over Case while O'Brien was edged in three sets by Michalofsky.

Curry returns to action on Wednesday, March 20 at UMass Dartmouth for a 3:30 first serve. Johnson & Wales will next play on Thursday, March 21 against Gordon at the Manchester Athletic Club at 7:30 p.m.
