Men's Tennis Edged By Suffolk, 5-4

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Curry College men's tennis team was edged by Suffolk University 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols. The win pushes the Rams to 1-1 on the season while the Colonels slip to 0-9.

Curry opened the match by taking two of the three doubles points. The second doubles team of Richie Helfer (Canton, Conn.) and Nicholas Piotrowski (Groveland, Mass.) got past Omar Azzoui and Cameron Roach (Norwell, Mass.) by an 8-6 final. The first doubles tandem of Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) and Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) topped Ariel IIarslan Russo (Panama) and Mike DeFelice (Branford, Conn.), 8-4. The Rams were able to salvage a point at third doubles as Rami Esrawi (Braintree, Mass.) and Kevin Greenman (Dunellen, N.J.) defeated Zach Muller (Methuen, Mass.) and Samuel Pitts (Cohasset, Mass.), 8-6.

Heading into singles play, the Rams won four of the six points to take the match by the slim margin. IIarslan Russo pulled past Roach in two close sets by 7-5, 6-3 scores at the number one singles position. Stento fell to Azzoui at number two in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Hefler captured the first set at three singles 6-2 but DeFelice rebounded to win the final two sets 6-0 and 6-1. The final point for Suffolk came at fourth singles as Roach topped Piotrowski by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores. Curry came away with the victory at number five with Muller defeating Tang 6-4 and 6-1. Pitts came away with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number six as the Colonels would fall in this non-league matchup.

Curry will next play on Tuesday, April 3 at home against Salem State at 3:30 p.m. Suffolk returns to action on Thursday, March 29 against UMass.-Boston at 4:30 p.m. at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.
