BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomores Juan Rodriguez (Quito, Ecuador) and Joel Vastl (North Salem, N.H.) combined to win at number one doubles and both won their respective singles matches, with Vastl’s three-set win at number two singles clinching the match as Wentworth’s men’s tennis team defeated Curry, 5-4, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match.

Rodriguez and Vastl picked up the Leopards’ lone point in doubles play with an 8-4 win over Colonel senior Tyler Dulmage (Woodstock, Vt.) and classmate Charles Edlund (Hanover, Mass.) at number one doubles.  That would be the only point the hosts would take in doubles play as senior J.D. Moyer (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and sophomore Tyler Collins (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) teamed up to defeat Wentworth junior Nate Gove (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Thuan Nguyen (Randolph, Mass.), 8-2, in number two doubles, and senior Robert Rosenbaum (Sharon, Mass.) and junior Thomas Bagley (Centerville, Mass.) won an 9-8 (7-5) decision at number three doubles over sophomore Tim Nguyen (Windsor, Conn.) classmate Dave Filar (Wolcott, Conn.).

Thuan Nguyen defeated Collins, 6-3, 6-0, at number four singles to even the match before Rodriguez put Wentworth ahead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dulmage.  The lead was extended to 4-2 after Tim Nguyen defeated Rosenbaum, 6-3, 6-4, at number five singles.

Bagley used a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) win over Filar at number six singles to cut the lead to 4-3 and the Colonels evened the match at 4-all when Moyer defeated Gove, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at number three singles, setting up the finish of the number two singles match to decide the outcome.  Vastl edged Edlund, 7-6 (10-8) in the first set before Edlund took a 7-5 win in the second set.  The third and deciding set went to Vastl by a 6-2 score, giving the Leopards a 5-4 win.

Wentworth improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in TCCC play.  The Leopards are at Western New England on Saturday.  Curry falls to 0-2 (0-1) and hosts Salve Regina, also on Saturday. (Match recap courtesy of Wentworth Sports Information)
