Men's Soccer Slides Past Anna Maria in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 3-1 victory over Anna Maria College Thursday evening in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, Curry improves to 1-0-0 overall on the season.

Curry wasted no time getting on the board in their 2022, scoring just 1:41 into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Lucas Drons (Bellingham, Mass.) scored the quick marker for Curry, off an assist from junior Adam Pforr (Weymouth, Mass.).

In the 14th minute, Curry extended its lead to two when junior Ean McGonigle (Rehoboth, Mass.) headed home a JD Santiago (La Plata, Md.) cross for his first goal of the season. The 2-0 advantage would hold up until halftime.

In the 56th minute, Anna Maria made things interesting when Rubelsi Moran found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the lead was extended back to two when Drons converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute, taking all the drama out of Curry's season-opening victory.

Playing in his first collegiate contest, freshman Brendan Cunningham (Middletown, N.Y.) got the win for the Colonels in net, stopping six of the seven shots he faced.

Curry will be back on the pitch on Sunday up Interstate-95 at the University of Southern Maine. Kickoff from USM is slated for 2 p.m.
