McGonigle Scores in 90th Minute to Lift Men's Soccer Over Mass. Maritime

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College sophomore Ean McGonigle (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored with 36 seconds remaining in regulation on Tuesday afternoon to lift the Colonels to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference men's soccer action at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, Curry improves to 1-1-1 on the season, while Mass. Maritime drops to 0-3-0.

The game was a defensive struggle for much of the game until McGonigle's last-minute marker. The teams combined for six shots on goal the entire contest, with Curry holding a 5-1 advantage.

Curry controlled the play much of the second half, holding a shot advantage of 7-4 and a corner kick advantage of 8-0. The Colonels had a handful of quality chance before breaking through in the 90th minute, the best of which coming when freshman Eddie Medina (Las Cruces, N.M.) hit the crossbar in the 77th minute.

McGonagle's tally came off a scramble in front of the net, as Curry peppered the Mass. Maritime box. When the ball popped free at the top left side of the 18-yard box, McGonagle took a low shot to the near post that beat the Buccaneer keeper for the game's first and only goal.

Senior Luke Robitaille (Seekonk, Mass.) earned a shutout in his first start of the Colonels, making one save. Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) made four saves in the losing effort.

Next up for the Colonels, they'll return to the pitch to host Elms College on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. at Walter M. Katz Field. Mass. Maritime will host Maritime (N.Y.) in a non-conference battle the same day for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
