Men's Soccer Tops Anna Maria in Season Opener, 1-0

SALEM, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team captured their 2018 season opener, topping Anna Maria College 1-0 in overtime at the Salem State Tournament on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Colonels move to 1-0 while the AMCATS slip to 0-1.

Curry controlled possession from the start, outshooting Anna Maria 10-1 in the first half. The Colonels continued to attack in the second half, registering nine shots to the AMCATS zero. With the discrepancy in shots, Curry was unable to find the back of the net in regulation, sending the contest to overtime.

In the 97th minute, Brandon Dickens (East Hartford, Conn.) put a shot past Anna Maria keeper Jeffre Donahue (Rockland, Mass.) to give the Colonels the victory. Nick Vreeland (Kensington, Conn.) picked up the assist on the goal.

Paul DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) recorded the shutout, making one save in the win. 

The Colonels controlled all areas of the contest and led in shots (20-1) and had the edge in corners (9-2).

Connor Francis (Colchester, Conn.) registered the lone shot for Anna Maria.

Brandon Rinaldi (Watertown, Conn.) and Claudio Orsini (Watertown, Conn.) each registered four shots.

Curry (1-0) returns to action on Saturday, September 1 as they will play Salem State in the Championship Game of the Vikings' Tournament at 4:00. Anna Maria will square off against Southern Vermont College in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
