Men's Soccer Shuts Out Visiting Salem State, 2-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated Salem State, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. This is the third shutout in a row for the Colonels.  The squad has outscored their opponent 21-1 in their last four games.  With the win Curry improves to 4-0 overall while the Vikings fell to 0-3 on the season.

Despite the Colonels controlling the first half, they were unable to finish on their shots and the teams went into halftime scoreless.  Curry had some good chances to get on the board but solid play by Salem's sophomore goalkeeper, Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) kept the game tied at 0-0. Curry held a 16-7 advantage in shots but only half landed on net with Enos making the eight stops.  The Vikings forced the Colonels junior netminder, Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) to stop four of their seven strikes.

It wasn't until the 63:07th minute of play that the Colonels would net their first of the match and eventual game-winner.  Senior Matt Cotnoir (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied his second goal of the season after he collected his own rebound and one-timed it past Enos.  Cotnoir took a shot inside the 18-yard box. Enos made the save but couldn't hold onto the ball.  Cotnoir took advantage of a wide open net after collecting the loose ball and finished for the game-winning tally.  Just 9:27 minutes later Curry earned an insurance goal off a penalty-kick.  A Viking defender committed a foul inside the box and senior Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) was awarded the shot.  Montero shot low and to the left of Enos who dove right.  Salem kept the pressure on the Curry defense but struggled to get around them and get a good shot off.  The Vikings had 10 strikes but Johnson only saw one.

The Colonels finished with 33 shots and six corner kicks.  The Vikings finished with 16 shots and five corner kicks.

Johnson made five saves for his fourth consecutive win in net.  Enos made an impressive 18 stops in goal in the loss.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, September 12 when they host CCC opponent Salve Regina in a 2:00 p.m. game start.  Salem State returns to action when they host UMass Boston on September 16 in a 7:00 p.m. start.
