Men's Soccer Edges Western Connecticut State, 1-0, in Season Opener

DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman keeper Austin Tierney (East Hampton, Conn.) made three fantastic saves in his first collegiate game, but the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Curry College at The WAC on Saturday night.

Darren Smith (Newcastle, Del.) scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute when he was left alone in the middle of the box following a nice feed from Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.).

The Colonials, now 0-1 on the young season, had a chance to tie the game with 5:33 remaining but Jon-Thomas Caprino's (White Plains, N.Y.) shot caromed off the right post.

Tierney finished the night with nine saves while Easton, Conn. native and Joel Barlow high school graduate Dan Johnson turned away four shot for the winners.

As expected in a one-goal differential, Curry held an 18-14 advantage on shots on Saturday,

The Colonials take to the road on Wednesday, September 3 when they play at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.  Game time is slated for 4 pm.  The Colonels travel to Newbury for a 3:30 p.m. game start at Newbury College.  (Game recap courtesy of Western Conn. Sports Information)
