Stein Nets the Game Winner as Men's Soccer Edges Western Connecticut, 3-2

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team defeated the visiting Colonials of Western Connecticut, 3-2 on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 6-4-2 overall.  The Colonials fell to 2-8-2 in the loss.

The Colonials took the early lead when they got on the board 13:11 into the opening frame.  The Colonels committed a foul right outside the 18-yard box which gave Western Connecticut a free kick.  Freshman midfielder Aislan Sartori (Danbury, Conn.) was awarded the kick and earned his first collegiate goal.  Sartori's kick sailed over the head of senior netminder Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.).  The Colonials held on to their lead for most of the half but with just under four minutes remaining Curry tied the match.  Sophomore defender Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.) dribbled the ball into the corner of the box and looked as if he was going to cross it.  The ball however found the back of the net as it slipped by Western Connecticut's sophomore goaltender Bobby Strevel (Enfield, Conn.).

After the first half, Curry had six shots, three saves, four fouls and two corner kicks.  Western Connecticut had 10 shots, one save, four fouls and one corner kick.

The Colonels came out strong to start the second stanza taking over the lead at the 51:19 minute mark.  Sophomore midfielder Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn.) earned his first tally of the night when he one-timed the ball from around the 20-yard line.  Curry's lead didn't last long as Western Connecticut tied it at two apiece just 4:20 minutes later.  Junior midfielder Rodolfo Rocha (Danbury, Conn.) sent a pass to teammate, freshman midfielder Vigan Pacuku (Prospect, Conn.).  Pacuku was wide open in front of the net and drilled the ball low into the corner past Barber.  Both teams battled with each squad having ample opportunity to net the game-winner.  It looked as though the game would go into overtime but with 2:33 remaining, sophomore forward Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.) collected a loose ball around the penalty kick marker and blasted it in for the victory.

The Colonials held an edge in shots 20-17 while the Colonels led in corner kicks 5-3.

Barber made seven saves in net for the win. Strevel had five stops in goal for the loss.

Curry travels to conference opponent Gordon College on Saturday, October 12 for a 7:00 p.m. game.  The Colonials are next in action when they host UMass Boston on the same day for a 5:00 p.m. start.
