Men's Soccer Falls to Visiting Roger Williams, 7-2 in Final Regular Season Game

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men’s soccer team lost to Roger Williams University in their last regular season game, 7-2 on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Colonels fell to 11-8 overall and 3-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Hawks improved to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the conference.

Each team came out strong to start the opening frame and kept their competitive play throughout the entire half, but it was the Hawks who held a slight advantage in shots, leading the Colonels 13-11.  Roger Williams were the first to get on the board at the 32:27 minute mark when junior Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) received a through ball from freshman Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine).  Caruso dribbled past one Curry defender and placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net past Curry senior goaltender Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.).  The Colonels fought hard to even the score, but the Hawks junior netminder, Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) was solid between the pipes to hold Curry scoreless.

Roger Williams put up another three tallies before heading into the break.  Just over 12 minutes after the Hawks first goal, Hoxsie and Caruso teamed up for their squads second on the night.  Caruso put a shot on net, which rebounded off Barber.  Hoxsie was right there to collect the rebound.  The third goal was scored off a free kick after Curry’s senior Zachary Kumin (Needham, Mass.) committed a foul just outside the 18-yard-box.  Roger William’s senior Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) was awarded the kick and one-timed the ball which sailed over the head of Barber.

Curry had 11 shots, three on net, two corner kicks and four fouls.  Roger Williams had 13 shots, nine on net and four fouls.

The Hawks continued to dominate the game and went on to score four more goals on the night.  They put up their fourth point on the board just 3:07 minutes into the final 45. Freshman James Sheldon (Amherst, N.Y.) was able to net the ball off an assist from Caruso that was crossed from the corner of the field.  The Colonels picked up their play and were able to tally their first just 1:45 later. Sophomore Nicholas Lawless (Hull, Mass.) won the ball off the whistle and dribbled down the field. Lawless saw an open teammate in sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sent a pass.  Gilman was able to place the ball right over the head of sophomore Kevin Oliveira (Bristol, R.I.) who subbed in net for Pelloso.  The Colonels continued to pressure the Hawks and cut their lead down to two, after freshman Lucas Carneado (Houston, Texas) scored his first collegiate goal of the season.

Both squads were persistent as each team challenged each other’s keepers, but the Colonels were unable to score and the Hawks earned three more unanswered tallies.   Freshman Tyler Peckham (Coventry, R.I.) put the fifth point on the board unassisted. The sixth score was from Sheldon who made way past the Colonel defenders to go one-on-one with Barber who was unable to make the stop.  The final of the game came with just 51 seconds left in regulation. Freshman Jedu Armar (London, England) was subbed in with less than two minutes to play and scored his first goal of the season off an assist by Sheldon.

Curry finished with 21 shots, eight on net, four corners and 12 fouls.  Roger Williams ended with 30 shots, 21 on goal, three corners and 11 fouls.

Barber made 14 saves in net for the Colonels in the loss.  Pelloso earned the win making three saves for the Hawks in his 45:00 minutes of play. Oliveira finished in net for Roger Williams and made three stops.

Both teams finish their regular season schedules with tonight’s game. Both teams will await seeding for the Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal tournament games.
