Men's Soccer Edged 4-3 by Visiting Conference Foe Gordon

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team lost to visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Gordon College, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon.  With the loss the Colonels slip to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the CCC. The Fighting Scots improved to 5-9-1 overall and 4-3 in the CCC.

The Colonels came out strong at the first whistle and kept their competitive play throughout the entire half.  Curry out-shot the Fighting Scots 11-8. They were the first to get on the board at the 27:00 minute mark when senior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) sent a pass from the corner of the field to classmate Nick Lawless (Hull, Mass.), who was able to net the ball.

Both squads battled on the turf with each team having ample opportunities to score, but the Colonels were able to hold on to their one-goal lead heading into the break. Scots' junior goaltender Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) was solid between the pipes to hold off the Colonels for the remainder of the half. Senior Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) made seven stops in net for Curry to keep Gordon scoreless.

Curry finished the first 45 minutes with 11 shots, seven on net, four corners and six fouls. Gordon had eight shots, seven on net, one corner and five fouls.

The Colonels were quick to increase their lead when they tallied their second on the night just 1:35 into the second frame.  Sadlers dribbled the ball down the sideline and took a shot outside the 18-yard box which soared over Hardy’s head.

It did not take the Fighting Scots long to cut Curry’s lead to one, just over two minutes later. Sophomore David Egeler (Danbury, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal after collecting a rebound off a Colonel defender in front of the net.  Curry once again regained a two-goal lead to go ahead 3-1 at the 38:25 minute mark.  Sophomore Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) received a through ball from Sadlers, who notched his second assist.

Gordon went on to score three unanswered goals in the final 35 minutes of regulation. The scoring spree began when sophomore Kristian Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) one-timed the ball into the back of the Colonels net. The tie eventually came after Curry sophomore defender Samuel Babchuck (Bridgewater, Mass.) committed a foul inside the box. The foul resulted in a Gordon penalty kick.  Junior Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) took the shot for the Fighting Scots which sailed into the right-hand corner of the net as Barber dove in the opposite direction.

Once Gordon evened the match they started to pick up momentum.  The Fighting Scots’ earned the game-winner with just over 6:00 minutes left to play when Egeler received a pass from Kasiguran, giving their team the 4-3 victory.

Curry finished with 26 shots, 17 on net, six corners and 11 fouls.  Gordon ended with 24 shots, 19 on goal, two corners and 10 fouls.

Barber made 15 saves in net for the Colonels in the loss.  Hardy made 14 saves for the Fighting Scots in the win.
