Men's Soccer Shut Out by Second-Ranked Amherst College, 5-0

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's soccer team lost to the second nationally ranked Amherst College, 5-0 on Tuesday evening. The Colonels fell to 7-3 overall, while the Lord Jeffs remained undefeated at 6-0.

Seven different Jeffs factored into the scoring en route to the 5-0 non-conference win over Curry.  Amherst also recorded its fifth shutout this season and has outscored their opponent 22-1 during that span.  The Colonels saw its three-game win streak come to an end in the loss.

The Jeffs took control of the game immediately after the opening whistle.  Amherst nearly set the tone just 1:10 into the game when a shot rattled off the post.  The Jeffs peppered the Colonel backline with eight shots over the game’s first 10 minutes.  Solid play however by senior goalkeeper Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) kept the teams scoreless despite the Jeffs holding a 25-6 shot advantage.  Barber made nine saves in the opening frame.

Along with getting outshot 25-6, Amherst held a 6-1 a lead in corner kicks.

The Jeffs continued their aggressive play which seemed to be too much for the Colonels as they put up five tallies on the board in the final 45 minutes of play.  The scoring began just 4:04 into the half when senior Spencer Noon (Farmington, Conn.) headed the ball into the back of the net for the first and eventual game-winning goal after he received a pass from junior Brendan Caslin (Lincoln, Mass.) from the corner of the field.  At the 63:13 minute mark, Caslin earned his second assist on the night when he sent a through ball to teammate, senior James Mooney (Princeton, N.J.) who fired it into the upper right hand side of the net.  Amherst got their third goal off a penalty kick after a Curry defender committed a foul in the 18-yard box.  Sophomore Milton Rico (Philadelphia, Pa.) was awarded the PK and one-timed it past Barber who nearly made the save.  Sophomore Mike Hoeksema (Bethany, Conn.) was the second Jeff to have two assists in the game after he had a free-kick around the 45-yard line that found the foot of sophomore Bubba Van Wie (New Gloucester, Maine).   Hoeksema next sent a volley to freshman Greg Singer (San Jose, Calif.) with just 6:45 remaining in regulation for the fifth and final score.

Amherst finished with a 52-11 shot advantage and a 12-5 edge in corners.

Barber put together a solid showing, making 21 stops in the loss.  Freshman netminder Thomas Bull (Montgomery, N.Y.) made four saves on the road to his sixth victory in 78:00 minutes of play, while freshman counterpart Will Poss (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) made one save in 12 minutes of play.

Curry will travel to Salve Regina on September 29 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match-up at 2:30.  The Lord Jeffs return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they host Tufts in a 2:30 start.
