Men's Soccer Edges Fitchburg State, 5-3, for First Win of the Season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 5, 2012) – The Fitchburg State men’s soccer team fell victim to a pair of unanswered second half goals as it dropped a 5-3 decision to non-conference foe Curry College this evening at Elliot Field.

Curry came out racing, scoring two goals in the opening eight minutes of play as Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass./Wachusett) and Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) notched back-to-back goals for the Colonels 2-0 advantage. Guglelmello struck first with a tally off a feed from Rolando Montero (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) while Gilman collected an unassisted marker at the 7:32 mark.

The Colonels padded their lead (3-0) with a Nicholas Lawless (Hull, Mass./Hull) goal just eight minutes later (15:55), but Fitchburg State came marching back, closing the half with a pair of scores for a one goal deficit at the break (3-2). Junior Carmen Bordonaro (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) hit home first for the Falcons, tallying a breakaway in the 18th minute, while freshman Stephen Luna (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) connected for his first collegiate goal nearly ten minutes later.

In the second half, Fitchburg State knotted the score (3-3) with George Sullivan’s (Milton, Mass./Milton) first marker in a Falcon uniform, but consecutive goals from Curry’s Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) and Guglielmello ended the Falcon comeback hopes  and sealed the victory for the Colonels.

For the contest, Curry out-shot Fitchburg State 31-11 while posting a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) suffered the loss in net for the Falcons, totaling nine stops in the complete game effort, while senior Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) notched two saves over 81:25 of work for the Colonels.

Fitchburg State (0-2-1, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it visits Becker College at 2:30 p.m. Curry (1-1, 0-0 TCCC) will host Johnston State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Fitchburg Sports Information)
