Newsome Selected to Play in 2011 NEISL Division III Senior All-Star Game and Mendel to Coach

MILTON, Mass. – Senior goaltender, Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, NJ) will participate in the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Division III All-Star Game, which begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (Nov. 27) at Harvard University.  Head Coach Peter Mendel has been selected to coach one of the teams. 

“This is a great honor for Brian, says Head Coach Peter Mendel.  “He has been a tremendous athlete for our program. His leadership on and off the field have been instrumental in helping to build the Curry soccer program.  I am also excited for the opportunity to work with such fine young student-athletes,” continues Mendel.  

Newsome finished the 2011 season with 1336:40 minutes played in 16 games, 21 goals against, 1.41 goals against average, 81 saves, with a .794 save percentage and an overall record of 9-6-1.  He has been a four-year starter for the Colonels and has accumulated All-New England, All-Conference and weekly honors.  Newsome is currently in the all-time record book at Curry.  He is ranked first (11, 2008) and third (6, 2009) for shutouts in a season, first for shutouts in a career (20, 2008-2011), first (0.84, 2008), second (1.22, 2009) and fourth (1.41, 2011) for goals against in a season and first (1.24) for goals against average in a career.

Mendel has compiled an overall record of 48-45-10 in five seasons. His best season was in 2008 when he compiled a record of 16-5-3. At the end of the season, he was named as the Commonwealth Coast Conference “Coach of the Year.”
