Men's Soccer Hands Suffolk University a 4-2 Loss

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Suffolk University, 4-2, in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday in Milton.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 6-5 overall.  The Rams fell to 3-6 overall.

Curry and Suffolk battled the first half to a 1-1 tie. The Colonels held a slight advantage in shots with 16-11.  Out of the Rams 11 shots only five landed on net, one being the first goal of the game.  Senior Nick Cugine (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored off a through pass from junior Michael Missouri (Moss, Norway).  Suffolk’s goal came at the 20:07 mark.  Out of the Colonels 16 shots, 11 landed on net, but only one got past, freshman goalkeeper James Potter (North Kingston, R.I).  Potter made 10 saves to hold Curry to just one goal in the half.  Four minutes after the Suffolk score, Curry’s junior Nick Lawless (Hull, Mass.) got his first of two goals on the day.  Junior Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) was credited with the assist when he crossed the ball from the corner of the field, to set Lawless up for the goal.  Both teams had chances to take a lead heading into intermission, but the half with the 1-1 tie.

Suffolk came out in the second half taking control of the game right off the first whistle.  Just 6:52 minutes into the second, the Rams took back the lead.  Senior Danny Lloyd (Tegucigala, Honduras) received a pass from freshman Babacar Sembene (Dakar, Senegal) right at the top of the box and one timed it past senior goalkeeper Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J).  Once again, it didn’t take long for the Colonels to respond and tie the game at two apiece.  Six minutes after the Suffolk tally, Lawless scored his second off an assist from freshman Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.).  Gilman had a corner kick and Lawless had a diving header that landed in the back right corner of the net.  Curry took the lead for the first time in the game 15:37 minutes in the game when junior Eric Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) scored off Gilman’s second assist on the day.  Guglielmellos’ goal was the eventual game-winner.  Suffolk kept the pressure on over the next 26 minutes but couldn’t find an opportunity to tie the game.  The Colonels weren’t finished, and with just under two minutes remaining in the game Guglielmello scored his second off an assist from Sadlers.   Sadlers once again dribble down the side of the field beating a Suffolk defender and crossing the ball that connected with Guglielmello. 

The Rams finished with 22 total shots, 11 on net, 13 fouls and nine corner kicks.  The Colonels finished with 32 shots, 18 on net, eight fouls and 10 corner kicks. 

Newsome, who made nine saves, earned the win in net for Curry. Potter finished with 14 saves in the loss for Suffolk.

The Colonels will host Newbury on Tuesday, September 27, for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Suffolk will host Saint Joseph’s of Maine on Wednesday, September 28 also for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
