Men's Soccer Team Turns Out in Support of Ty Wilhelmsen

EAST MILTON, Mass. - On September 11, 2010, many people were remembering the attacks from nine years earlier. The Curry Men’s Soccer team was at another event they will remember for a lifetime. The team was just down the road in East Milton to watch Ty Wilhelmsen in his first-ever soccer game. In 2005, Ty was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor and it was thought that he would never play sports. The Curry Men’s Soccer team partnered with the Friends of Jaclyn organization and an everlasting bond was formed with the Wilhelmsens.

Up until now, it was always Ty cheering on the Colonels, but now it was time to switch roles. As Ty took the field, the Colonels took to the sidelines. In the first half, Ty’s team was down 5-1. The team was feeling a little down, but the Colonels provided the encouragement they needed. To that point, Ty had played well, with one tremendous defensive play to clear the ball from the face of goal.

In the second half, it was goal after goal and celebration after celebration. Ty’s team completely turned the game around, and by the final whistle, the game had finished 6-6. What a comeback it was! Ty never scored, but celebrated every goal like he did, and beamed with happiness all throughout the game.

After the game, Ty’s sideline radiated with emotions from everyone. The Colonels went to watch what they thought was just a game, but ended up with a life-long memory. Head Coach Peter Mendel was as emotional as anyone, and with pure astonishment on his face, he said: “this kid never ceases to amaze.” All in all, it was a great day for the Colonels and Ty!
