Men's Lacrosse Falls in Double Overtime on Opening Day

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Curry College men's lacrosse team suffered a 9-8 defeat at the hands of the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Curry opens its season with an overall record of 0-1.

Both offenses were clicking in the first half, and the Blue Jays held a narrow 4-3 at the end of one quarter. After USJ opened the scoring early, junior Connor Bryant (Methuen, Mass.) scored Curry's first goal of the season at the 2:59 mark off an assist from classmate Stephen Stackhouse (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). Sophomore Brody Dalzell (Wrentham, Mass.) and senior Dom Cerone (Hanover, Mass.) also scored in the opening 15 minutes.

Both teams scored three times in the second quarter, as the Blue Jays carried a 7-6 lead into the locker room. Cerone finished off the hat trick in the quarter with a pair of goals, while Bryant netted his second of the contest in the frame.

The defenses took over after the break, as the teams combined for just four goals in the final 36 minutes of the game. Senior Robbie Tartaglia (Wrentham, Mass.) scored the only goal of the third quarter for his first goal of the season, knotting the score at 7-7 headed to the fourth.

The first goal of the season from junior Pat Modoono (Billerica, Mass.) gave Curry the lead with 5:11 left in the contest, but the advantage only lasted for 71 seconds before Saint Joseph forced overtime with a goal with exactly four minutes remaining.

After neither team found the back of the net in the first overtime session, USJ's Christian Decker tallied the winner 2:44 into the second overtime to give the Blue Jays the victory.

Curry junior netminder Evan Falandys (Leominster, Mass.) made 12 saves for the Colonels before exiting the game in the second overtime period. He was replaced by Austin Brown (Scarborough, Maine), who made one save and took the loss.

Next up for the Colonels, they will travel to Wheaton on Saturday for a 3 p.m. faceoff against the Lyons.
